British Airways Holidays saw an unprecedented surge in the number of views on its Marrakech holiday pages last night after rumours spread that George Clooney and his new bride Amal Alamuddin were heading for Marrakech on their honeymoon.

Usually seeing a few hundred visitors to the page, the page has notched up several thousand views over the past 24 hours.

Claire Bentley, Managing Director at British Airways Holidays, said: “It’s amazing how quickly these rumours translate in to views on our website. Celebrities are having an incredible impact on travel trends. We can almost predict the increase in interest on our website when big celebrity stories hit the press.”

The city has also played host to other celebrity visitors, and was the destination of choice for a second star-studded celebration for Poppy Delevingne and James Cook, as they tied the knot earlier this year.

Susan Gellatley, British Airways’ Marrakech destination manager said: “It’s no wonder Marrakech is so popular – it benefits from fantastic temperatures all year round, and the exotic red city has so much to offer. Visitors can head to the Medina to experience the true Marrakech, wander around spice-scented souks and visit the magnificent Bahia Palace and Koutoubia Mosque or just enjoy shopping in the chic boutiques of Gueliz, followed by cocktails to enjoy soaking up the electric atmosphere by night.”

Over the last twelve months, the teams at British Airways Holidays have been monitoring the most popular pages visited on the website and the list below forms the top five celebrity events that have driven views on ba.com in 2014:

1) The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – Australia
2) Cheryl Cole wedding – Mustique
3) Simon and Eric Cowell’s first holiday – Miami
4) Kim and Kanye West with daughter North at Fashion Week – Paris
5) Made in Chelsea visit New York – New York

To celebrate and to offer fans a chance to beat the crowds, British Airways Holidays is offering four nights at the 5* Kenzi Menara Palace from £419 per person including breakfast, travelling from October 5 to November 30 . Includes return flights from London Gatwick.
