Independent travel journalist Simon Calder has given his views on recent changes at British Airways that have featured in media stories.
Interviewed on BBC Radio4, he explains that it’s airline competition and customer pressure for ever-lower fares that lead to new initiatives such as buy-on-board catering and increased seat densities.
“Don’t blame British Airways. It’s me and you and everyone else demanding ever-cheaper flights,” he says.
“UK travellers have the most ferocious airline competition in the world. If you are paying less to go from Gatwick to Barcelona than you are on the train from London to Southampton, you can’t really complain about not getting a free G&T or having to scrunch up a bit at 30,000ft.”
